Stem Cells for Augmenting Tendon Repair
نویسندگان
چکیده
Tendon healing is fraught with complications such as reruptures and adhesion formation due to the formation of scar tissue at the injury site as opposed to the regeneration of native tissue. Stem cells are an attractive option in developing cell-based therapies to improve tendon healing. However, several questions remain to be answered before stem cells can be used clinically. Specifically, the type of stem cell, the amount of cells, and the proper combination of growth factors or mechanical stimuli to induce differentiation all remain to be seen. This paper outlines the current literature on the use of stem cells for tendon augmentation.

Objective- To investigate the effect of intratendinous injection of bMSCs on the rate and extent of tendon healing after primary repair in a rabbit model. Design- Experimental study. Animals- Twenty seven skeletally mature New Zealand white rabbits weighing 1.8- 2.5 kg were used. Twenty rabbits were used as the experimental animals, and seven others were used as a source of bone marrow-derived ...
متن کاملTendon Regeneration and Repair with Stem Cells
The use of stems cells in tendon repair is of particular interest given the frequency of tendon injuries worldwide together with the technical difficulty often encountered when repairing or augmenting tendons. Stems cells have the capability to differentiate into a variety of different cell types including osteocytes and tenocytes, and if normal architecture of damaged tendon (either macroscopi...
متن کاملStem cell technology for tendon regeneration: current status, challenges, and future research directions
Tendon injuries are a common cause of physical disability. They present a clinical challenge to orthopedic surgeons because injured tendons respond poorly to current treatments without tissue regeneration and the time required for rehabilitation is long. New treatment options are required. Stem cell-based therapies offer great potential to promote tendon regeneration due to their high prolifera...
متن کاملEffects of rabbit pinna-derived blastema cells on tendon healing
Objective(s): Tendon healing is substantially slow and often associated with suboptimal repair. Cell therapy is one of the promising methods to improve tendon repair. Blastema, a population of undifferentiated cells, represents characteristics of pluripotent mesenchymal stem cells and has the potentials to be used in regenerative medicine. The aim of this study was to ...
متن کاملAugmenting Peripheral Nerve Regeneration Using Rat Hair Follicle Stem Cells (rHFSCs) in Rats
Introduction: Nowadays, cell therapy is the most advanced treatment of peripheral nerve injury. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of transplantation of hair follicle stem cells on the regeneration of the sciatic nerve injury in rats. Methods: The bulge region of the rat whisker was isolated and cultured. Morphological and biological features of the cultured bulge cells were ob...
